Defying the restrictions of society, Emma Johnston plans to become a teacher and help broaden the lives of young women. Society, her father, and even her own heart betray her and leave her longing for a different life entirely.

After having run up considerable debt, Emma’s father needs her inheritance from her maternal grandfather and he has a plan that seems guaranteed to get it for him, until Roger Starnes steps in and rescues her.

Together, the headstrong heiress and her protector scheme to stop her father and allow her to live her life, on her terms.

“Good afternoon, Miss Johnston, Miss Duncan.” Emma turned and choked on a gasp of surprise. It was the young man she had seen the day before, following her about town and again this morning at church. Emma and Patti were both taken with the deep, intense blue color of his eyes. They were intelligent eyes, holding a sparkle of mischief and laughter in them. A lock of black hair had fallen over his forehead, giving him a somewhat dashing air. Many men strove for the look and failed to attain it, but this man wore it as if it were as natural to him as breathing.

“I fear you have me at a disadvantage, sir,” she said, not certain if she was more alarmed by his knowing her name or the thrill of excitement that ran through her as he introduced himself.

“Please forgive me. I know it is rather bold of me to introduce myself this way. My name is Roger Starnes. I am an associate of your grandfather. He has been kind enough to point you out to me on any number of occasions, but has not had the opportunity to introduce us as yet.”

“Oh,” was all Emma could think to say, her breathing unsteady.

“I must say, this is rather bold and unusual behavior, Mr. Starnes. Most gentlemen would wait to be introduced,” Patti reprimanded him gently.

“Yes, but the opportunity presented itself, and I was loath to waste it.” He smiled charmingly at Emma and Patti.

“Would you care to take another stroll around the lake? I will understand if you are quite tired of the sight, considering how many times you have been around it today.”

“Keeping tabs, are you?” Patti was protective. Emma let her talk for a moment, trying to regain control of herself.

“It’s hard not to keep track of the most beautiful girl here,” Roger replied.
